This Weekend in Mason, Michigan - Hometown USA

This weekend is the big Michigan Steam Engine & Thresher's Club 48th annual Reunion, just south of Mason. This year's event runs from 8 a.m. to dusk July 28-30 at the club's home on the east side of U.S. 127 and Barnes Road. Visitors can see early steam engines powering a sawmill, lots of antique engines and there's even a flea market for those seeking antique engine parts. Noon will be marked with a blast of steam engine whistles and there's a daily parade of old tractors at 4 p.m. Call Carl Knoblauch at (517) 819-1471 for more information.

Before or after visiting the event, stop across the road and check out the latest at Merindorf Meats at 2289 W. Barnes Road. The Merindorf Meat Market provides only the highest quality meats and meat products. The market offers a wide selection of U.S.D.A. choice beef cuts from an old-fashioned meat counter, specialty smoked meats, carefully selected specialty food items, and chicken, pork, buffalo, elk, and venison items. http://www.merindorfmeats.com/

This weekend is the big Spring Fling, the 23rd annual arts and crafts show on the Courthouse Square in downtown Mason. Hosted by the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce, the event runs from 9 AM to 4:30 PM with over 100 booths and festival food. Stop by the MACC Ambassadors booth "across from the cannon" for details on other events in town that day. See the Corvette convertible the Chamber is raffling off -- at its first public display by the Chamber booth. Friday evening is the 5 K Run, there is a craft fair at the high school, the Historical Society is doing a pie sale and a yard sale, the Animal Shelter has a program, the Friends of the Library are having a book sale, etc.

This weekend continues to brings thoughts of springtime and outdoor projects. Ace Hardware at 340 S. Cedar Street (676-4900) has been a big help this past week in getting odds and ends together for our event. You might also want to stop in or call the store to purchase products for your own special project.

This Weekend in Mason, Michigan - Hometown USA

This weekend, many Mason area residents will be with their families celebrating Easter. Don't forget that many of our local stores are open this weekend for those last-minute items to make your holiday complete. My family and I will be attending both a family brunch and dinner on Sunday. With a bit of traveling involved, I'm making sure that our food contributions are purchased right here in Mason and prepared in advance -- before I travel to Lansing and Ann Arbor.

This weekend also brings thoughts of springtime and outdoor projects. Kerr Hardware at 222 S. Cedar in Mason (676-5040) is a full-service hardware store that strives to provide the best in customer service. Stop in or call the store to purchase products for that special project. If they do not stock the item, one of their friendly employees will be happy to special order the item for you.

This Weekend in Mason, Michigan - Hometown USA

The Mason Cabin Fever Craft Show is Saturday, April 8th from 9:00 to 5:00 and on Sunday, April 9 from 10:00 to 4:00 at the Main Arena Building of the Ingham County Fairgrounds at 700 E. Ash Street in Mason. This a privately produced show with 100 crafters under one roof and with no admission or parking fees. The building is handicapped accessible. To get to the Fairgrounds from US 127, get off at the Kipp Road exit and follow the fairgrounds signs.

After the craft show, leave the Fairgrounds from the north side on Temple and turn left on Ash. Proceed through the downtown and out to Cedar Street. Turn right on Cedar and follow it for a while around to stop at Mason's A&W Restaurant on the right. Not only will you be really close to the Cedar street entrance onto US 127, but Manager Jeff Haeuter says that they now have foot-long hot dogs available for sale at the A&W. There's nothing like a frosty mug of root beer and a classic foot-long before you head home!

This weekend, don't miss the Friends of the Mason Library annual gallery showing and sale of fine art by local artists in the Mason Library auditorium. And, while you're in the Mason area, walk less than a block toward the Courthouse and stop for a meal at the Cayenne Grille -- 402 S. Jefferson Street in downtown Mason. Right next to Kean's Store, the smoke-free, affordable restaurant has a great hometown atmosphere with breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- Tex/Mex, pasta, steaks, soup and salad and burgers -- all with courtesy, prompt service, and great food.
